In 2008, the dynamic trio 2 FOOT YARD (violinist Carla Kihlstedt, cellist Marika Hughes, percussion/guitarist Shahzad Ismaily) saw the release of their second studio album, Borrowed Arms, and included a second European tour and their first U.S. club tour in support of the new recording which prompted raves such as, “..every tune is magic: the melodies crystalline, the harmonies supple and complex, the rhythms offbeat and groove-deep” - SF Weekly. Last season also included a successful run of residencies and performances at the Krannert Center, Moab Festival, and UC San Diego as part of a new ArtPower! Series, The Tentacle Sessions: "Performance that grabs you and won't let go". The Tentacle Sessions features young artists who say no to labels and yes to wild, virtuosic, intensely exciting music. In Feb 2008, violinist/ vocalist/composer Carla Kihlstedt also premiered the newest version of a work commissioned by Alverno College and the Chicago MCA through NPN. The piece, Necessary Monsters, is a song cycle based on characters from Borge’s Book of Imaginary Beings.
