ART TATUM:THE 100 YEAR LEGACYAnthony de Mare and Steven MayerThe 2008-2009 season marks the centenary of Art Tatum, the blind African-American genius, born in Toledo, Ohio in 1909, who is widely regarded as the greatest pianist in the history of jazz. Art Tatum - The 100 Year Legacy celebrates Tatum and the icons who influenced him-Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson, "Fats" Waller and Duke Ellington, as well as composers Charles Ives, George Gershwin, George Antheil and Aaron Copland, whose compositions share some of the traditions of these early African-American pioneers. Performed together by pianists Anthony de Mare and Steven Mayer, this multi-faceted presentation includes original film footage of Art Tatum from the 1940's, as well as rare "live" Tatum recordings. Anthony de Mare has been described as "a wonder every listener must hear to believe" (Fanfare Magazine) and commands an unsurpassed breadth of American piano repertoire. Steven Mayer is the leading worldwide re-creator of Art Tatum's music. Gramophone said of his 2004 Naxos release of Tatum solos: "You could be hearing the great man himself."
